The Void Vessels is a research-based architectural and urban design project. Inspired by natural phenomena – climate change and sea level rise in New York City by 2050, it proposed a new methodology of maximizing urban density, reinterpreting the potential of underground space. Sea level rise in NYC by 2050 would physically and economically change in the Downtown Brooklyn area. Thereby, we would like to propose a adaptive urbanism to the natural phenomena. The ten architectures composed of curved and ameba-like gemetry are inserted into the existing urban context that is preserved. In addition, huge-scale urban void space that would collect the stormwater when flooding event is happened could exchange the energy combined with geothermal energy system as a new type of urban infrastructure. The tower on the above ground has diverse type of residential units so that this site area could have similar urban density to the Manhattan, because the region is very close to Lower Manhattan, which is second denser area in NYC. In conclusion, The Void Vessels project would be a new kind of architectural and urban design proposal, closely related to natural phenomena as a human-made urban infrastructure that means an anthropogenic behavior in this era.

The Void Vessels는 건축적 도시디자인에 대한 새로운 방법론에 대해 연구한 프로젝트이다. 2050년 뉴욕의 기후변화와 해수면 상승에 대비하여 도시적인 밀도를 높이는 새로운 방법을 제안한다. 지하 공간의 가능성에 대해 건축, 도시적 관점으로 재해석하였다. 2050년 뉴욕의 해수면 상승은 다운타운 브루클린 지역에 큰 변화를 가져올 것으로 예상된다. 이는 물리적, 경제적 피해를 동반할 것이고 이러한 자연현상에 대해 적응하는 도시론을 제안한다. 때문에 곡선형으로 구성된 10개의 건축물을 기존 도시의 컨텍스트를 보존하면서 도시 조직에 끼워넣었다. 지하 공간에는 해수면 상승과 기후변화에 따르는 홍수의 피해를 건축물을 통해 적극적으로 받아들이고 거대한 보이드 공간으로 빗물을 모으고 지열 에너지와 결합하여 에너지로 치환하는 도시적 인프라스트럭처를 디자인하였다. 지상 공간의 타워는 주거 유닛으로 배치하여 맨해튼과 비슷한 도시 밀도를 가지도록 하였고, 지하 공간에는 쇼핑몰과 캠퍼스, 공연장 프로그램을 배치하여 미래의 사람들이 지상 공간 뿐만 아니라 지하 공간에서도 동일한 활동을 할 수 있도록 만들었다. The Void Vessels 프로젝트는 자연현상과 관계되는 미래 도시 공간에 대해 탐구하고 새로운 건축적, 도시적 방법론에 대해 제안하는 프로젝트이다.
