Retro Samcheong project is located in Samcheong-dong, Seoul. While the site is in Samcheong-dong, it’s a proposal to reinterpret the border between Bukchon Korean Traditional Village and Samcheong-dong street. Samcheong-dong has been characterized by cultural context, since Chosun Dynasty which was old Korea, so many galleries and art studios make antique and artistic atmosphere in the area. The height difference between Bukchon Village and Samcheong-dong is almost twelve-meter at which two areas could not closely connected each other in terms of culturally and commercially. Retro Samcheong proposes not only to overcome these physical limits but also to hybridize the potential of two regions. First of all, architect Yongmin Lee designed three-dimensional back street – a core character of two areas, and remade Joonghak River, which was reclaimed in industrial age of South Korea. The back street he designed had similar atmosphere that small scale Korean Traditional Houses were created in which people experienced irregular back street. With this architectural strategy, he amplified cultural and commercial potentials, placing guest house, gallery and retail stores as programs. Through Retro Samcheong project, the streets in Samcheong-dong could be regenerated.

레트로 삼청 프로젝트는 서울시 종로구 삼청동의 건축적 도시재생 프로젝트이다. 사이트는 삼청동이지만 삼청동과 북촌한옥마을의 경계점에 대한 건축적, 도시적 재해석이 담긴 계획안이다. 삼청동은 조선시대부터 이어져온 문화적인 컨텍스트가 특징이다. 때문에 갤러리, 화방 등이 한옥과 현대건물들 사이에서 고풍스러운 분위기를 만들어내고 있다. 북촌한옥마을은 삼청동 거리보다 약 12미터의 높이차를 두고 있어서 두 지역간의 문화적, 상업적 연계에 한계가 있다. 레트로 삼청 프로젝트는 이러한 물리적 한계를 건축적으로 극복하고 두 지역의 분위기를 융합하는 도시적 재생을 제안한다. 먼저, 과거에 복개되었던 중학천을 복원하고 3차원의 골목길을 디자인하였다. 계단과 연속적인 길이 한옥을 닮은 건축물들을 골목길처럼 지나다니는 동선을 디자인하여 삼청동과 북촌한옥마을이 본래 가지고 있는 도시적 컨텍스트를 불어넣었다. 이러한 디자인과 함께 게스트 하우스, 갤러리, 카페 등의 프로그램과 연계하여 문화적, 상업적 잠재력을 최대화 하였다. 레트로 삼청 프로젝트를 통해 삼청동의 거리가 재부흥되는 되기를 바란다.
